Sometimes it’s frustrating when you, or someone you know, are dealing with stress or trauma and the doctor says you can either take a pill or just find a way to live with it. Dr. Richard Brown believes there are other alternatives… and he should know! An Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University, Dr. Brown consults and designs research and advises PhD candidates on projects involving mind-body-spirit practices for stress, trauma, military service, mass disasters, cancer, HIV, and other illnesses.
An expert in herbal medicine and one of the first to come out and suggest SAM-e for depression, Dr. Brown also went 8000 feet up a mountain in Russia to sample the wild Rhodiola plant, the basis of his book The Rhodiola Revolution. A fan of CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine,) Dr. Brown has over 200 speaking engagements on the subject every year and provides free courses for Ground Zero workers and survivors of the 9/11 World Trade Center attack. He’ll be on the show next week to give us insight into natural ways of dealing with mental and emotional problems.
If you want preview of Dr. Brown and some of the subjects we’ll cover, check out these websites: www.STWS.org and www.HaveHealthyMind.com. You’ll also find information about his newest book: How to Use Herbs, Nutrients, and Yoga in Mental Health Care. In it he covers integrative approaches for the treatment of anxiety, depression, mood disorders, cognitive and memory impairments, Attention Deficit Disorder, sexual dysfunction, medical illnesses, schizophrenia, and substance abuse. There’s no way we will be able to cover all that ground… but you know we’re gonna try! Hope you’ll join us next week on A Closer Look when we talk with Psychiatrist Dr. Richard Brown. Please consider being part of the conversation. With such a great resource at our fingertips, why not let Dr. Brown answer some questions for YOU?
